'Exchange program in The Netherlands: Eye opening traveling experience and enlightenment'

Written by Ahamedul Karim Chowdhury, A Bangladeshi student of Master in Shipping and Transport Netherlands Maritime University-South Korea

'Traveling is best hobby in the world it always gives us new experience. For eye opening it is the best way. Enlightenment broadly means wisdom or understanding enabling clarity of perception. As a part of our Master course we attended a month long exchange program in the Netherlands. It was an amazing and well organized exchange program managed by STC-NMU, The Netherlands. Our full course is running here in STC-NMU Campus in Gwangyang, South Korea. Question may arise that whether it was a study tour? I can simply say, no. It was not like a simple study tour, it was an amazing exchange program simultaneously with our normal course running as usual. We had an examination and also regular classes there as normal schedules. We used our time as like as Korea even though we have enjoyed a lot, and have seen different things. Accommodation was very nice and well organized. I didn’t get any shortage of anything...'

Gwangyang, September 2007

Subject: Information STC-Group activities in Korea

On September 10, 2007, Foundation STC-Group (STC-Group) opened a new branch school in Gwangyang-City in Korea.  This development is part of STC-Group’s vision to establish knowledge hubs in major transportation clusters in the world. The opening of a branch school STC-Korea is unprecedented being the first established Foreign Educational Institution in Korea. The school is located at the World Marine Center in Gwangyang, looking out over the port activities. The location is strategically chosen in the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, one of Korea’s largest ports.

A feasibility study conducted in 2005, financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs under the PESP programme showed there is a need for professional educated people in the areas of ports, logistics and supply chain management on different levels.

This study formed the basis for further elaborations with Korean about the contents of the education programme. These discussions were concluded with a Memorandum of Understanding with counterpartners, namely Gwangyang City government, Korea Container Transport Association, Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, Jeollanam-Do Province government.

Initially the education and training services will focus on two core elements:

  • (short) courses for professionals already working in the port and logistics business, such as transport English, shipping management, freight forwarding, supply chain management and ISPS port security courses;
  • a Master degree program‘Shipping and Transport’ which started in March 2008, similar to the Master program starting in Rotterdam. This will be a completely English language curriculum.

In addition, there are a number of other initiatives under way to further foster cooperation and knowledge sharing in the field of ports and logistics education between Rotterdam and Gwangyang.

STC-Korea will offer a unique education model, which is based on an old Confucian saying: ‘I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand’.  STC-Group is convinced that hear and see leads to fleeting knowledge, while do and experience is crucial for acquiring good competencies. This point of view is the didactical basis for the choice to use simulators for education and training.

STC-Korea is officially opened on the 10th of September 2007. The opening ceremony was done by the acting ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands, Korean Minister of Finance and Economy, Vice-Minister of Maritime Affairs, Gouvernor from Jeollanam-Province, Mayor of Gwangyang-City, high representatives from the Ministry of Education, Yeosu Regional Office, Commissioner of Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone Authority, and delegates from a number of education institutions in Greater Gwangyang area.

The STC-Group is a world-wide strategic combination of well-established education, training, research, support, consultancy and implementation service providers for the entire shipping, port, transport and logistics chain as well as for the port-related oil and chemical industry.Next to the activities in the Netherlands, the STC-Group has knowledge hubs and subsidiaries in countries as Vietnam, South-Africa, Oman, Korea and the Philippines. In another fifty countries it provides consultancy, training and education projects. More than 500 people are employed at the STC-Group.
